How Long Is Channel Tunnel ?

Introduction
The channel tunnel, the rail link beneath the English Channel, is 50 K.m. long. It connects the United Kingdom and France and consists of  three runnels, two for rail traffic and a central tunnel for services and security. Channel Tunnel is located 40 meter underwater. High speed passenger Trains and shuttles crossover the Channel Tunnel. It was one of the world's major and costliest engineering projects build in 1991. Eurostar is the high speed passenger train service that runs through the Channel Tunnel.

Construction
The construction of the Channel Tunnel began in 1875 in France. However it was stopped in 1882. The construction was revived in 1986 by the United Kingdom and France.

Opening
In 1987-1988, the digging began on both sides of the Strait of Dover and was completed in 1991. The tunnel was officially opened in May 1994. 

Trains
Trains run through the tunnel at the speed of 160 km/hour in about 35 minutes.

Fire
Channel Tunnel fire occurred on Nov 18,1996 when a fire broke out on a heavy goods shuttle inside the Channel Tunnel.
